Dispersants and anti-scalants for the mining sector in SA

It’s no secret that the mining industry in South Africa contributes significantly to both GDP and jobs, making it an important part of the nation’s economy. However, mining uses a lot of water and produces a lot of effluent with different pollutants, such as heavy metals, dissolved minerals, and suspended particles.

Therefore, efficient water management is essential for environmental sustainability and operational effectiveness. The mining industry in South Africa consumes around three percent of the country’s total water every year, according to SciELO SA. This highlights the industry’s enormous demand for water and the necessity for effective water treatment methods.

Blue Reef Water Solutions is a leading South African water treatment company that offers speciality chemicals and outsourced services for a range of industries. We create bespoke chemicals for mining applications, including dispersants and anti-scalants. These water treatment chemicals ensure adherence to strict environmental regulations and help to minimise downtime.

What are dispersants and how do they work?

Mining wastewater often contains high amounts of suspended particles, such as tailings, clay, and mineral fines. These particles can separate from the water and produce deposits and sludge, which can clog pipes, reduce processing equipment efficiency, and raise maintenance expenses. Dispersants are used to stop these particles from settling and clumping together.

By changing the surface characteristics of the suspended particles, dispersants create repulsive forces between particles that maintain their dispersion in the water. Usually, dispersants work through steric or electrostatic stabilisation processes. The type of suspended particles and the particular dispersant determine the intricate chemical interactions that take place.

Temperature, pH, and the concentration of other ions in the water also affect how efficient a dispersant is. Achieving ideal dispersion and avoiding settling requires careful consideration of the type of dispersant selection and accurate dosing. Blue Reef can assist mining companies with these decisions.

What are anti-scalants and how do they function?

Water in mining applications is often rich in minerals, which means they tend to cause scale formation within pipes and processing equipment. Scale deposits – usually made of calcium carbonate, magnesium silicate, or other mineral salts – can accumulate inside pipes, heat exchangers and other equipment, decreasing efficiency and limiting water flow.

Anti-scalants prevent scale from forming. They obstruct the precipitation and crystal development of minerals that produce scale. Anti-scalants function through various processes, such as chelation, threshold inhibition, and crystal distortion. In mining, it’s important to understand thresholds when adding anti-scalants to water as you want just enough to stop scale development but insufficient to chemically bind all the scale-forming ions.

How Blue Reef can help mines and mineral processing plants

To meet the unique requirements of mining and mineral processing facilities, we have created a variety of custom water treatment chemicals. These dispersants and anti-scalants are borne out of years of research and development and are guaranteed to satisfy the highest performance and quality standards. Our team of skilled chemists has created these water treatment chemicals for the harsh conditions of the South African mining sector.

To create customised water treatment solutions that optimise effectiveness and save expenses, we work closely with our clients to understand their unique needs. We consider many variables, including the plant’s operating circumstances, the water chemistry, and the ore’s mineralogy, to create the best chemicals for mines and optimise their dosages.

Blue Reef is a reputable producer and distributor of bespoke water treatment chemicals, catering to both domestic and foreign customers. We are dedicated to offering our clients unique, environmentally friendly solutions that support their operational and strategic objectives. Mining companies that work with us gain access to world-class chemicals, knowledgeable technical assistance, and customised solutions.
