Why post-treatment chemicals are important

Water treatment is a multi-stage process that is intended to purify water and make it suitable for various industrial processes and human consumption. Primary and secondary treatment focus on removing contaminants and larger particles from water, however, post-treatment is an important final stage of the entire process.

Post-treatment guarantees water satisfies the necessary quality criteria for its intended use. The significance of post-treatment chemicals and procedures cannot be overlooked. Blue Reef Water Solutions is a leading South African water treatment company that offers speciality chemicals and outsourced services for a range of industries. These include a range of post-treatment chemicals and equipment.

The value of post-treatment for water quality

Post-treatment focuses on eliminating leftover impurities that are often too small or too challenging to remove using primary and secondary techniques. Microorganisms, dissolved salts, trace metals, and other contaminants can all have an impact on the quality of water and its suitability for industrial uses.

Treated water may still present health concerns, damage machinery, or impede industrial operations if adequate post-treatment is not done. Post-treatment is crucial in the food and beverage sector to get rid of any leftover microbes that could contaminate products or make people sick.

Ultra-pure water, attained by post-treatment procedures, is also essential to the pharmaceutical industry and its ability to manufacture safe and effective drugs. Similarly, in power plants, dissolved minerals in water may lead to boiler and turbine corrosion and scale formation. These are just a few of the examples of the real-world applications of post-treatment.

Equipment needed for effective post-treatment

Specialised equipment is necessary to deliver and monitor the chemical processes involved in effective post-treatment. To achieve the required water quality without overdosing, which can be wasteful and perhaps hazardous, precise chemical dosing is essential.

For exact control over chemical addition, dosing pumps, flow meters, and online analysers are crucial tools. Real-time data on water quality is provided by monitoring devices including pH, conductivity, and turbidity meters, which enable operators to make necessary modifications.

Blue Reef provides outsourced engineering solutions since it understands that not all of its clients have the means or know-how to handle these intricate systems internally. For our clients, we can create, set up, and operate post-treatment systems, offering professional management and guaranteeing peak performance.

Advanced post-treatment filtration methods

In post-treatment, sophisticated filtration methods are needed to remove dissolved materials and extremely small particles. The following are some important technologies:

  • Microfiltration (MF) – MF eliminates bacteria, larger viruses, and suspended particulates using membranes with pore diameters between 0.1 and 10 micrometres. For other membrane procedures, it is often used as a pre-treatment step.
  • Ultrafiltration (UF) – UF eliminates viruses, colloids, and bigger organic molecules by using membranes with pores that are smaller (0.01 to 0.1 micrometres). It’s effective at improving water clarity and eliminating turbidity.
  • Nanofiltration (NF) – NF membranes are capable of eliminating organic compounds, certain salts, and multivalent ions due to their even smaller pores (0.001 to 0.01 micrometres). It is often used to remove pollutants and soften water.
  • Reverse Osmosis (RO) – RO eliminates almost all dissolved salts, minerals, and organic compounds using membranes with the lowest pore sizes (less than 0.001 micrometres). It is the most efficient way to produce high-purity water and desalinate water.

When combined, these filtration techniques offer an effective way to improve the quality of water during post-treatment, eliminating a variety of impurities and guaranteeing that the water satisfies strict standards.

Desalination and metal/ion removal

The last phases of post-treatment, desalination and metal/ion removal, concentrate on eliminating dissolved salts and particular ions to produce water of the highest calibre. Desalination, which is mostly accomplished via RO, is essential for turning brackish or saltwater into drinkable water in areas with scarce freshwater supplies.

Certain contaminants, such as heavy metals like lead or arsenic, which can be extremely harmful to one’s health, are the focus of metal and ion removal. These pollutants are removed selectively using specialised adsorbents or ion exchange resins.

Whether for drinking water, industrial processes, or environmental discharge, these last steps are crucial to reaching certain water quality standards. They minimise dangers and maximise efficiency by making sure that water is both safe and appropriate for its intended use.
