What you need to know about our corrosion inhibitors

17 September 2024

Many industrial companies rely on high-pressure steam-generating systems and boilers. Corrosion is a major concern for these companies as it can cause equipment damage, decreased performance, and higher maintenance expenses. Corrosion inhibitors are essential for protecting metal surfaces and extending the life of equipment. Water has innate corrosive properties that can cause a number of issues. Metal equipment can be weakened by the formation of rust, which can result in leaks, malfunctions, and expensive repairs. Similarly, equipment performance is affected by corrosion, which raises energy costs and decreases output. Blue Reef Water Solutions is a leading South African water treatment company that offers speciality chemicals and engineering for steam-generating systems, boilers, condensers and more. We are a Level 2 B-BBEE company and are committed to social responsibility and environmental sustainability.

What are corrosion inhibitors?

Corrosion inhibitors are made specially to protect metal surfaces from the corrosive effects of water. By lowering the rate of oxidation, neutralising corrosive agents, and creating a physical barrier between the metal and the corrosive environment, these solutions help to prolong the lifespan of expensive equipment. Blue Reef provides corrosion inhibitors which meet the varied requirements of different industries. Our corrosion inhibitors have two basic functions:

  1. They are designed to shield boiler tubes and other components in steam-generating systems from the corrosive effects of high-temperature, high-pressure water. They function by creating a protective coating on metal surfaces and neutralising corrosive chemicals.
  2. One of the main causes of corrosion in water systems is oxygen. Chemicals known as oxygen scavengers react with dissolved oxygen which prevents a reaction from occurring and reduces its corrosive effects.

Liquid versus powder corrosion inhibitors

Blue Reef offers liquid and powder corrosion inhibitors. Choosing between these two comes down to the particular application, handling convenience, and storage needs. Transporting and storing chemicals in powder form is typically less expensive. However, employees need to handle them carefully and dilute the powder in a solution before adding them to the water system. On the other hand, chemicals in liquid form are easier to handle and administer, which makes them perfect for small-scale use or situations requiring exact dosage. If you are unsure of which option is best, speak to one of our expert consultants; they will be able to guide you to the right choice based on your needs.
